10 Incredibly Bizarre Facts About Space

Researchers state that our universe is so immense that even light hasn’t yet travelled it in nearly 14 billion years. The speed of light is so intense it travels 186, 282 miles per second. That means the time it took you to read this far, a proton leaving the sun has travelled about 10 million kilometres which is the equivalent as travelling around the earth 250 times. With such a majestic scale there is a lot we don’t know about space, and perhaps won’t ever know. But to make things a little better, we have collected some of the most bizarre facts that we do know about space that will shock you:

1. While you are in space, you are a time traveller.

Time travelling is, in fact, possible In space. This is called “Time Dilation” This happens because the Planet’s orbit gives us an extra second per week. This is one of the many theories Albert Einstien researched on.

2. We are actually inside the sun.

Because the earth is located inside the sun’s atmosphere, we are basically in a planet residing inside the sun.

3. 55 Cancri e is a planet made out of diamonds.

Scientists state that this rocky planet which is 40 lightyears away from Earth might have a surface made entirely out of diamond and graphite. It has a radius twice that of Earth and mass eight times greater.

4.  Space has a putrid stench.

Have you ever thought about what space smells like? well, It certainly isn’t pleasant. It is described by astronauts with the strangest things such as “Hot metal”, “Welding Fumes”, “Seared Steak”, But it’s still something they can’t exactly place their finger on. An Astronaut by the name of Tim Peak said: ” This is a favourite question of mine and yet one of the hardest to answer. That is because yes, space does smell…but exactly what it smells of is much harder to put your nose on..”

5. No matter how hard you try, no one can hear you scream in space.

No one can hear anything in space because there is no oxygen and oxygen is needed to carry sound waves.

6. Pieces of your feet fall off a month in orbit.

“The Calluses on your feet in space will fall off,” Said the Astronaut Scott Kelly, who had spent an entire year in space. “So, the bottoms of your feet become very soft like newborn baby feet. But the top of my feet develops alligator skin because I use the top of my feet to get around here on the space station when using foot rails.”

7. There is a Volcano three times larger than Mount Everest on Planet Mars.

According to scientists, Olympus Mons, the largest volcano on Mars may still be active. It is a monstrous 550 km wide and 27km high reaching three times the size of Mount Everest which is only 8.8km high.

8. The smallest mistake made in space will kill you.

Out of the 430 people that went into space, 18 have never returned. Nearly 30{6b324edeae7c2736577d8f42103a940304599a9e2d85fe35a4a1d916b377a8b2} of people have died in the 1970s during the Heyday of space exploration. So far we have only made it to the moon. A trip beyond the moon would be incredibly fatal.

9. Every year the moon gets 3.78 centimetres further away from Earth.

Scientists say that the moon is slowly distancing itself from our planet. It spins 1.4 inches away from the earth every year which is spinning somewhat the same speed as our growing nails.

10Neutron stars spin 600 times per second.

Neutron stars are the tiniest stars in the known universe. They have the mass a few times that of the sun even though they have a radius of about 10km. They rotate in tremendous speeds up to 60 times per second after they are born from a core-collapse supernova star explosion and are known to spin as fast as 600-712 times per second.
